Unit 9.!

1. I feel the American dream is being free with the feeling and urge to do whatever you want to do without harming and hurting others. I also think this is a reality because this is want eveyone wants at the end of the day. In this unit i think were going to get into maybe American history. Since this is the last unit i think Mr. Siegmund is trying to throw a twist in.
2. I chose the Harlem Renaissnace. I chose this because the African Americans felt that american dream was a lie and they weren't getting what they expected. In the story i expect to see a lot of people struggling during these times in New York. In the story they will be promoting their own talents that are unique to them. Such as music like Blues, Jazz and Gospel..!!
3. What i liked about the story is how the Slemmons lied about the fake gold in order to slepp with Joe's wife. I found that that was clever. I didnt like the fact of taking Missie May back at the end because she cheated on the man..! For fake gold..!! Overal i did like the story and would like to read more stories like this..!!
They propmoting their own talents and cultures by talking the way she was talking in life for real.! This matters because this lingo was important because this was the way they talked. "Na, naw. Ah don't want you to git no sweeter than whut you is already. We goin' down de road a lil piece t'night so you go put yo' Sunday-go-to-meetin things." This is an example of dialecc because it shows you how exactly she sounded..!!
4. "Richard Corey", i think that the story was kind of a mislead becuase the people who thought Mr. Richard had it all, but he went home and killed himself..!! This is showings disillusionment because the people that admired him dont understand whats going on with him. "In fine, we thought that he was everythimg, To make us wish that we were in his place.

"Mending Wall, i thought that this story wasn't relative towards me because i don't have a fence at my home but we are very cool with the neighbors. Therefore i didnt like the story. But in the story the nieghbor wanted to put up a fence but he kind of challenged the neighbor by saying the fence wasnt really necassary. The man that wanted the fence was disillusined because he was going on a saying that his father's saying without thought. This also shows disillusion because this isn't even a good fence and it shows that they get along fine.
He will not go behind his father’s saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, “Good fences make good neighbours.”

"Harlem". is a story that Langston Hughes wrote descibing the American dream. Saying that we get put off and our dreams get rotten and old and are just left and forgotten about. This story is an example of disillusion because he shows that we are foolish to still wait on changes and things to happen when its not.

"What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?"

"The Negro Speaks of Rivers" is also a poem written by Langston Hughes. In this poem he is saying how everyone is getting credit for the stuff that the Negros created.  This is disillusion because he wants to make sure that people know that white people didnt ceate these things."I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young."

Incident was a story that reminded me about everyday life. A lot of people go through life hoping to see big things but when they get there its nothing they thought it would be. I had a moment like this but it was just the oppisite. I was on a field trip to the aquarium. I thought it was gone be extra boring, but i liked it. In the story the man thinks he's going to move to the big city`and expects people not to be racisit. But he gets there and someone calls him a nigger. "And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."
In the story Chicago I think the big city is what the writer describes in and more. I know its a tough city up there from what I little know about Al Copone's life. This is an example of disillusion because people dont know what really going on in Chicago. The writer agrees but also is saying they dont care. "Its Chicago if you dont like it forget you." "
And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.
And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.

5. In this unit i showed how to find disillusion of the american dream. I showed in about 5 or 6 different poems how people are disillusione to the american dream. They wait and expect something good will happen soon but at the end of the day its still a dream that the government has forgot bout and left aside..!!

Unit 8.!

1. After reading the essential questions i feel that this unit will be about imagination vs. the real life.! I feel that imagination is always good but to a certain extent.! At the end of the day the REAL always matters.! And social problems could be anything from murdering on the street to child abuse in your own home.! I think that we have a lot of social problems in our society today but never enough answers for them.!
2. "And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome." This is a part in the story that shows realism. It shows it because we know that she is already sitting looking out the window. She didnt have to make us imagine where the setting is because she told us everything we needed to know. Then she opens her arms wide and let the feeling or this angel into her.!
"But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely." The social problem in this story is that ite 1894 and back then wives were pretty much told what to do in the household. Its not that she didnt love her husband, its that she was relieved that she would be free from being told what to do.! She wanted to be FREE FREE FREE..!!
3.In Battle with Mr Convey a lot is taking place in just these short days in the story.! "Mr. Convey took up a hickory slat with which Huges had been stroking off the half-bushel measure, and with it gave me a heavy blow upon the head" He is giving a lot of details so that we want use our imagination because its realism.!  "The blood was yet oozing from the wound on my head. For a time I thought I should bleed to death; and think now that i should have done so, but that the blood so matted my hair to stop the wound" This is also an example of realism because he's TELLING you whats happening to him.!
The social problem in this story is slavery.! "After lying there about three quaters of an hour, I nerved myslf up again, and started on my way, through bogs and briers, barefooted and bearheaded, tearing my feet sometimes at nearly every step"
4. "Im untaimed I need a leash, im insane i need a shrink, i love brain i need a leech, Why complain on easy streets, ion even talk i let the Visa speak." This is a quote from the rapper Lil Wayne. I chose this because i feel this is an example of realism because he's telling us what he has and needs. And he's not letting us imagine or figure out what he needs.!
5. I like the Dark Romanticism because i feel that its more enjoyable to read the realism, I feel that it catches my attention more.!
In Clown Town, a lot of strange things happen. Cars floating, moosing chirpping like birds, Tigers eating on Bulldawgs for brunch. No running water, can't even catch the Carta. A lot of weird and unfamiliar people live here. But this one family of animals sticks out the most about the town. Two furry feliens got together and created and Dotin (dog & kitten). This animal was a dog but instead of barking it meowed. Everywhere the animal went people knew who he was and who his parents were. He was teased a lot for what he was so he kept angry with his parents because of what they had made him but he never showed it. He was always calm and cool around his parents so they never knew. He sat alone in his room and drew pictures of his parents being eaten by this big furious beast. His parents never came up to his room so they never knew what he was doing. One day a pile of the drawing stood on the nightstand. The dog in lots of anger and having crazy thoughts about attacking. So a dogs instict is to capture and kill cats. The dog storming down the steps not darking but meowing in anger. He attacks his mother first by grasping hold of her neck and shaking and ringing her neck. He did this so much she was killed in the dogs mouth. During this the father cat was on the phone reporting the attack so the police were on there way. Before the police came the father was killed instantly by the dog. When the police arrived the dog was seized and captured and took in for questioning. He dog never could speak all it did was meow to the polices. They searched the home once again and found the drawings. The drawings were important to the polices because they told the whole story of what happened to the Cats. The furious beast the dog drew about was him, planning his whole attack on his parents.! So dog was convicted on catslaughter and put in Clown Prison.\

This is a good example of dark romanticism because it shows how everyone mind has evil in it. This goes against what the trancedentalist believe.
6. I can identify realism by looking for the theme or eveidence of what i have learned. I have also wrot in creative writing with evidence and expository writing to show how i under what realism is in this unit.

Unit 6.!

1. As usual I'm going to let you know what I think this unit will be about and how familiar I am with Gothisiscm.! I don't know much but i know they wear a lot of dark colors and mostly stay to themselves. Sometimes a lot of dark makeup over their faces and maybe a couple chains here and their. I never was nor will be the type to associate with the Gothic people. Because i feel like they worship the devil and me, personally believes in God. Not saying that they do worship the devil i just think that. Need i remind you i don't know much about Gallicism these are just my opinions.!
2. I feel that i am a Transcendentalist because original sin doesn't matter to me at all.! I feel that not ALL thoughts come straight from God but many do.! I know I'm not a Gothic because I feel that they worship the devil with their dark clothes and mysterious beliefs.! I know the things i hear in my head can be somethings good and sometimes bad.! I think it isn't all God speaking to you, because i feel if God can get in you head the devil can also.! But me personally believes in GOD.!!! yeaaaa
3.
4.   I have chose to read The Black Cat.! I chose this story because i figured it would be interesting, and it was.! I'm really not a Gothic fan but i respect where they're coming from and what they believe.! I liked this story because it caught my attention that another cat took Pluto's spot but it was his intuition and his guilt haunting him because he killed the other cat.! So i felt this story was better than most stories.!
"Beneath the pressure of torments such as these, the feeble remnant of the good within me succumbed. Evil thoughts became my sole intimates -- the darkest and most evil of thoughts. The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind; while, from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers." In this quote he is showing that his eveil thoughts are taking over the good part of his brain.! And the transcendentalist belived that God was and is always speaking through you brain and telling you to do all these nice things.! But this is showing what the Gothics believe.!!! "WOOT" "WOOT"
5."But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore--"
This stuck out the most to me because he pulls up a chair and looks at the bird like, "what are you doing in here.?"
6. "But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore--" This is an example of end ryhme because it rhymes and the end of two sentences.!
"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary," This is an example of internal rhyme because the word in the middle rhymes with the word at the end of the sentence.!
"Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before;" This is an example of alliteration because its repeating the D sound.!
7. The unit we have just completed was Gothicism.! I learned that what the trancedentalist believe is not always true because there are other people who have evil thoughts in there head like the characters i have read about during this unit.! The trancedentalist thought that it was always that voice in your head thats telling you to do the right thing.! Like God talking to you.!

Unit 5.!

1. In this unit I think we are going to be dealing with a lot of people imagining things that they wish could happen in their lives. I also think rational thought will be apart of this after people realize that they can only imagine for so long until they're being faced with reality.
2. I have found a couple of romanticism parts in the Rip Van Winkle story. As he rose to
walk, he found himself stiff in the joints, and wanting in his usual activity. These mountain beds do not agree with me,” thought Rip, “and if thisfrolic should lay me up with a fit of the rheumatism, I shall have a blessed time with Dame Van Winkle.” With some difficulty he got down into the glen: he found the gully up which he and his companion had ascended the preceding evening; but to his astonishment a mountain stream was now foaming down it, leaping from rock to rock, and filling the glen with babbling murmurs." Rip had helped a man, got drunk and passed out basically.! When he woke he found himself old and stiff. He had been laying there for years but he thinks overnight. "WHOEVER has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill mountains. They are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country. Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains,
and they are regarded by all the good wives, far and near, as perfect
barometers." This is something that people would love to see or live around because they never say anything like this. They were only used to seeing dead horses in the road and trash everywhere.!
3. This fits romanticism because it illustrates two of it main themes such as nature and imagination.

"To Nature's teachings, while from all around--
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air--

Comes a still voice--Yet a few days, and thee

The all-beholding sun shall see no more"

This fits nature because this poems is saying things that are of nature.! It uses imagination because we know that nature can't actually talk to us but we have imagination to understand what is being told in the poem.!

                                                                   "Thou shalt lie down

With patriarchs of the infant world--with kings,

The powerful of the earth--the wise, the good,

Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,"

This also falls under the romanticism category because it states common people. It is saying no matter who u were, when u die your equal with everyone else.!

4. Tennessee lost but The Falcons did too .!!! HAHAHAHAHA>!!! =)

5. "Most persons do not see the sun. At least they have a very superficial seeing. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child." This is from the poem "Nature." I chose this as a transcendentalism because this man believes that the sun didn't mean anything to the grown people of society. They don't care because they have more important things like bills, groceries, children of their own and car notes.!

But he also believed that the sun ment much more to the children. When the suns out for the children it means a time they know they can play. He is saying that the sun is a precious thing that doesn't live on the outside but also in the inside for most people. His point is that the sun takes the children to another place not physically but emotionally and mentally. But not on this day 10/11/11.!!!

6."To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars." This is an actual quote from the poem nature.! I can relate to this because I have a spot that I can go to and be alone which is in the wilderness. When your alone you can think more, you enjoy your own company, and no one bothers you.!

"Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood." This is chosen because i feel that it is also good to be misunderstood. I feel that no one has to understand you as long as you understand yourself.! The people who were mentioned in the passage were all misunderstood BUT they were right.!

7.  In the video he is saying that he was gone from the wild for a period of time but he feels great being back. He feels that the wilderness is the only place he can relax and where he can clear his thoughts without any distraction and other nonsense.! He is relating to Emerson's poems because he also feels the same way about nature. He also feels that nature is a place of tranquility.! He feels that nature calms down and erases a lot of negative thoughts and people.! "His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows." He is saying that nature covers your real problems, it heels you mentally but not phisically.
When we first began this unit I was a little familiar with romantism. Not so much that i could teach other people but as much as I felt I wanted to know.! But this unit was good, i liked it.! I learned that romantism can be nature, common people and imagination. Nature is a precious thing that many adore like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Dick Pronekke. These men enjoyed nature and its presence, they felt its the only thing that clears their minds. Common people are just regular folks like me and you. It takes imagination to really think and understand what these people believe.!!

Unit 4.!

1. My expectations on this unit just by reading what i have read so far is we are going to be doing a lot of what we did in unit 3. Which is persuasive writing and reason writing. We may touch a couple new thing such as rhetorical and aestheic. I don't know much about rhetorical but i know that a rhetorical question is an question that you ask and don't really want an answer to. I never heard of aestheic but i plan to learn about it due to Mr. Siegmunds teachings.!
2. Puritans believed that God was responsible for things having to do with nature. Such as if a lighting bolt hit the house, the puritans thought it was punishment for what someone has done.! Rationalists believe that God created machines to create other things such as bottles, plastic, buildings etc.. Some people believe that Adam and Eve where white but many question how did all of the races get here. Puratinas would have believed that God has put all these different races because that is what he wanted.! Racionalists would have believed that my skin is dark because if where i'm from or live around such as Africa.
3. The purpose of this was to analyze his behavior to become moraly perfect.! He is using logic because he is recording his behavior like data. Equiano wrote his story because he wanted someone to feel his emotionally pain. However, Ben is using reason and logic because he wants you to know something.! "I wished to live without committing any fault at any time;" He is using reason here beacuse this is why he made up the list to become morally perfect.!
4.
Tranquillity - have peace have drama with no one.!
Respect - obey yourself and the peers arounf you,!
Responsibility - be responsible for your actions.!
Health - watch weight and stay in shape.!
Guidance - guide and teach the yongers ones of my generation.!
Love - hate not.!
Live Life - be secular enjoy life on earth
Wisdom - In reality, humility means nothing other than complete honesty about yourself.!
Knowledge - be not the dumb one.!
Understanding - understand your surrounding and the people who u surround yourself with.!
Education - your considered nothing without a brain.!
5. "Early to bed, and early to rise, Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." i chose this quote because this falls under the early bird catches the worm. He is saying go to bed early wake up early get the money first.! This is rationalism because the is true and what most people do.!!!

UNIT 3.!

    1. I think this unit is going to be about a lot of comparing and contrasting amongst the two worlds. Im not neccarssarly meaing two worlds as in two Earth's. I mean the past in the present. I think we as a whole class would really enjoy this unit jusy by the conversation me and Mr. Siegmund just had. We talked about the music from the 70's and the music in 2011. I told him a phrase from someone i listen to and he thought it meant something totally different.
We will also be discussing persuasive emotion, meaning how people play with others emotions to get what they want or need, such as the humane society comercial with the animals they want you to feel bad for. Sometimes it could be a bad thing if your taking advantage of it and not using it in its proper manner. This is differrent from using reason, facts.!
2. The Native Americans they think that God and niceand has blessed them with many things. An is example of this is The Coyote Story: One day, Coyote was walking along. The sun was shining brightly, and Coyote felt very hot.
"I would like a cloud," Coyote said.
So a cloud came and made some shade for Coyote. Coyote was not satisfied.
"I would like more clouds," he said. More clouds came along, and the sky began to look very stormy. But Coyote was still hot.
"How about some rain," said Coyote. The clouds began to sprinkle rain on Coyote.
"More rain," Coyote demanded. The rain became a downpour.
"I would like a creek to put my feet in," said Coyote. So a creek sprang up beside him, and Coyote walked in it to cool off his feet.
"It should be deeper," said Coyote.
The creek became a huge, swirling river. Coyote was swept over and over by the water. Finally, nearly drowned, Coyote was thrown up on the bank far away. When he woke up, the buzzards were watching him, trying to decide if he was dead.
"I'm not dead," Coyote told them, and they flew away.
That is how the Columbia River began
However the Puritans had the leader that taught them that they were going to hell bacause of the wrong doings of Adam & Eve. The man in the video who was preaching was saying that he is the only chosen one for heaven.
3.  Yes, he's using emotion. The speaker is using fear to scare the listeners and followers. I know that because he says, "its like a rock falling through the spiders web." We all know a rock can not hold a rock. He's saying when you die your just going to fall right to the hell gates.!
4. "Lake of burning brimestone and the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God." this is a metaphor because he is comparing God's anger to things on earth. He is comparing God's wrath to the flames on earth. "If God should withdraw his hand they would avail no more to keep you from falling than the thin air to hold up a person that is suspended in it." This is creating an image in my head that a man i jumping off the highest building in the world.!
5. Olaudah Equiano wrote a story about when he was a young boy and how we watched people come and kidnapp people of his villiage and he used to hide so he wasn't taken by a kidnapper. But indeed his day came. Which hima and his sister were both taken and tied up. Their mouth's were covered with tape to keep from talking. A while later he was put on a slave ship where it had an awful stintch that made him loose his appetite. He refused to eat and was brutially beaten when he wasnt.!
He uses emotion to tell us how he was kipnapped and what happened during the kipnapping. "but my cries had no other effect than to make themtie me faster and stop my mouth, and then they put me into a large sack." He is telling us this so we can understands where he is coming from and wants us to feel sad through this.!

6. This poem is about a woman who feel that her husbands treats her very good. So she wants to reward him buts feels that the things on earth isn't enough for him so she prays and hopes he get into heaven because she's a purtain. Purtains believe that everyone is going to hell except for the chosen few.!!
"The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray. Then while we live, in love let's so persevere. That when we live no more, we may live ever." I chose this because i feel that this is the reward she wants her husband to recieve because she feels she can't pay him back for being a good husband with the fines things on earth. She feels that material things isn't a big enough reward.

UNIT 2.!

1. Lately our class has been discussing the writers purpose, objective vs. subjective and the importantance of a primary source. We're learning to read things critically. An example of one of subjects we having been going over is a primary source. A primary source come straight from the person or event that is taking place. Such as Martin Luther King Jr. If i wanted to know a fact about Martin. I would search for something he wrote or he did. Like the I Have a Dream Speech, he wrote this speech, those are his words therefore its a primary source.!

2. From The General History of Virginia:

"within ten days, scarce ten amongst us could either go or well stand, such extreme weakness and sickness oppressed us." This is important because this describes their actions and what they were going through, this makes it objective because this is what really happened and his feelings aren't getting in the way of his report on the facts.!

"Captain Smith, who, by his own example, good words, and fair promises, set some to mow, others to bind thatch, some to built great houses, others to thatch them, himself always bearing the greatest task for his own share, so that in short time he provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himself...." This is subjective because he is saying he help build everybody's house but didnt build any for his own. Meaning he's trying to make himself sound better, letting his thoughts get in the way of the real story.!

From Journal of the First Voyage to America:

"I went ashore, and found no habitation save a single house, and that without occupant; we had no doubt that the people had fled in terroer at our approach, as the house was completely furnished".  This is an example of subjective because he lets his feelings interfer of what is the main purpose. He feels that no one was inside the house because the home owners knew Christopher and the rest were coming. Maybe it was just at that moment they weren't home.

"Presently we saw several of the hawk's bells and glass beads, with which he was delighted. We asked him in return, for water, andafter I had gone on board the ship, the natives came downto the shore with calabashes full, and showed great pleasure in presenting us with it." This is objective because this is a fact. They traded some things to get want they needed which was water.

3. I fell that it doesn't matter what is being said as long as the reader is critically and understands the text then it doesn't matter. "The melody of the birds was so exquisite that one was never willing to part from the spot, and the flocks of parrots obscured the heavens." He saw a lot a birds he never seen before and he feels that if someone else were to come to this place they wouldn't want to leave because of the birds. We know that eventually we wouldn't want to sit around the birds all day and they would just fly off anyway.!

4. Over this unit we have read 2 primary sources about Chirstopher Columbouis and John Smith. I now understand what it is to just read a passage and critically read a passage. I have also learned the difference between telling the story and streching the truth a little which is called objective and subjective. Now I know what to look for in the storys i read in the future because Mr. Siegmund taught me yo.!!! KNOW THAT!!!

Unit One: Oral Tradition and Origin Tales

1. I think that this unit is going to be alot about the mid-evil times. Such as what the people went through to protect thier land. Also a lot about the heros of the old times such as Hercules and maybe Moses. I really dont think this stuff is important but whatevers makes the grade, im with it!!

2. One day, Coyote was walking along.

3. This is about a coyote kept asking for more and more luxiours because he was hot. When he kept asking he has drown by the water that he asked for. I like this because i feel as thought beggers cant be choosers. But the good thing about this story is that is how the Columbia River started. This is the largest rive in the Pacific Northwest. They felt this was important to know because the river is very important to them. They use their river to survive.

To the Onandaga people to was to left up the strong tree to see what was underneath the tree. I know this because the story states, "Then the chief called all the men together and told them they must uproot the tree". This is important because the cheif wouldnt waste his time on petty nonsense. When the tree was uprooted a women feel in the very deep whole. When she fell she was take care of by animals who wanted her to get back to earth because they knew she didnt belong here in the water. I know this because, "I will bring up Earth or die trying." Is what one of the animals said. This is important because they knew they needed to return the woman and help her.

The next myth i just read was about a great island in this huge body of water. The island had not so much life on it It had no people or crops. Animals that were on the island were told to stay up seven days and seven nights. But more than likly animals got tired and went to sleep every night of the seven. However the plants that were on the island stayed up and wanted to see what was going to happen.
So the plants were granted to stay green all year long and the owls and mountain lions were made to be up all night.
